~ Juneau, Alaska - As the winter season brings heavy, wet snow to the streets of Juneau, CBJ Streets & Fleet Maintenance is sharing important information and reminders about snow removal in the city.
According to CBJ Streets, their crews are responsible for maintaining over 250 lane miles of roads using a fleet of 6 motor graders, 4 loaders, 6 sand trucks, and 13 plow trucks. In order to ensure the safety of emergency vehicles, public transit, and school buses, more than 3,000 tons of sand are applied each winter.
However, with heavy snowfall comes challenges for both snow removal crews and property owners. CBJ Streets acknowledges the efforts made by property owners to keep their homes accessible and appreciates their understanding of the limitations faced by their crews.
In order to efficiently clear the streets, CBJ Streets has established a priority system for snow removal. The first priority is to clear access for emergency vehicles, public transit routes, commercial routes, and high-traffic streets. Residential areas are then cleared followed by low-traffic areas such as dead-end streets and cul-de-sacs.

While operators make every effort to minimize snow accumulation on private property, it is inevitable that some berms and windrows will form. However, CBJ Streets does not clear snow from driveways or private property.
It is the responsibility of property owners, landlords, and tenants to clear snow and ice from sidewalks and driveways. It is also important to note that placing snow or ice on any sidewalk or street is prohibited under CBJ code 72.24.075.
In addition to keeping sidewalks and driveways clear, it is crucial for residents to keep garbage cans at least five feet away from the edge of the street during snow removal operations. This will prevent damage to garbage cans and ensure efficient snow removal.
For more detailed information about snow removal on CBJ-owned streets, residents can visit the city's website at juneau.org/engineering-public-works/streets/winter-snow-removal. Information about snow removal priorities on DOT highways can be found at dot.alaska.gov/stwdmno/wintermap.
As the winter season continues, CBJ Streets & Fleet Maintenance urges residents to stay informed and follow these guidelines for safe and efficient snow removal in Juneau.
