~ The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) Assembly has approved a 5 percent increase in water and sewer utility rates, effective August 1, 2025. This decision comes after a comprehensive utility rate study and a series of public meetings and community presentations.
According to the CBJ, the decision to raise rates was necessary due to the unique needs of Juneau as a low-density community with a long and narrow footprint. The cost of operating and maintaining utility infrastructure in this type of environment is higher compared to dense urban areas. Additionally, deferring maintenance and replacement only leads to even higher costs in the future.

The finalized rates can be found on the CBJ website at bit.ly/CBJUtilityRates. Residents are advised to update their billing accounts to reflect the new rates in order to stay current.
This increase is just the first in a series of planned 5 percent increases that will take effect in July of each year from 2026 to 2029, as approved by Ordinance 2025-27. The revenue generated from these rate increases will be allocated towards operating and maintaining major water and wastewater infrastructure systems, as well as capital projects aimed at addressing failing infrastructure or ensuring regulatory compliance.
The CBJ also stated that these rate increases are necessary due to significant inflationary cost increases in utility operations and aging infrastructure needs. The city hopes that by implementing these changes now, they can continue to serve the community's water and sewer needs effectively for years to come.
