~ Juneau, Alaska - The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Mendenhall Lake and River after a glacier-dammed lake outburst. According to the forecast, the Mendenhall River is expected to crest between 11 and 11.5 feet on Monday, October 21, between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m.
At this level, View Drive will be flooded and impassable, with significant flooding expected in some homes in the area. Residents living along the river on Meander Way should also prepare for flooding in their backyards.
In light of these conditions, residents are strongly advised to take immediate precautions to protect their property and prepare for possible power outages. The National Weather Service also warns that temperatures in the Mendenhall Valley will be around 20°F when the river is expected to crest.
For the safety of themselves and others, all members of the public are urged to avoid the Mendenhall River until further notice. Recent snow has made banks unstable and slippery.
The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) is closely monitoring conditions in cooperation with local weather agencies and will continue to provide updates. The full statement from the National Weather Service can be found at https://www.weather.gov/ajk/suicideBasin.
