~ Juneau, Alaska - The City & Borough of Juneau (CBJ) is gearing up for its annual July 4 fireworks display on the Downtown Seawalk. The event, which is expected to draw several thousand spectators, will take place on Thursday, July 3 at 11:59 p.m.
However, CBJ officials are reminding residents and visitors that personal fireworks are strictly prohibited on the Seawalk and all other CBJ-owned waterfront properties. This rule is in place to ensure the safety of everyone in attendance.
Harbormaster Matt Creswell emphasized the importance of adhering to this rule, stating that the Seawalk can become extremely crowded on July 3 and a single spark or mis-fired mortar could cause serious injuries or even ignite the wooden structure. "Please help us keep the evening fun and safe by leaving the fireworks to the professionals," Creswell urged.
According to CBJ ordinances 36.80 & 67.01.090(m), using fireworks on any CBJ property is strictly prohibited. Violators will face a fine of $250 for a first offense and $500 plus a mandatory court appearance for subsequent offenses. Outside of CBJ property, fireworks use is limited to private land during specific hours only.

On private property, fireworks may be used from 10 a.m. - 11:59 p.m. on July 3 and from midnight - 1 a.m. and 10 a.m. - 11:59 p.m. on July 4. However, concussive fireworks such as mortars are only allowed outside of the Fire Service Area.
To ensure safety and enforce these rules, officers from Docks & Harbors, Capital City Fire/Rescue, and Juneau Police Department will be patrolling the Seawalk throughout the evening. Anyone caught lighting personal fireworks on the Seawalk will be asked to extinguish them immediately and may receive a citation. Open flames, including charcoal grills, are also prohibited on the wooden surface of the Seawalk.
In order to have an enjoyable night, CBJ officials recommend arriving early and considering alternative modes of transportation such as walking, biking, or using Capital Transit as parking is limited. They also advise dressing warmly as coastal winds can be chilly after sunset and leaving pets at home as loud noises and crowds can be stressful for them. Additionally, attendees are reminded to pack out what they pack in to keep the waterfront clean.
CBJ, Docks & Harbors, Capital City Fire/Rescue, and Juneau Police Department express their appreciation for the community's cooperation in keeping the Seawalk a safe place for everyone to celebrate. They urge everyone to enjoy the show and leave the fireworks to the experts.
