~ Juneau is gearing up for its annual Fourth of July celebrations, with just ten days left until the big day. The highlight of the festivities, as always, will be the highly anticipated fireworks show. Scheduled to begin at 11:59 p.m. on July 3rd and last for approximately 22 minutes, this longstanding tradition dates back to the city's mining heyday.

In those days, July 4th was one of only two holidays observed at the mines - AJ, Treadwell, and Thane - and starting the fireworks show a day early allowed miners to join in on the after-dark celebrations before their holiday began.

For those planning to watch the show from a boat in Gastineau Channel, it is important to note that a safety zone with a radius of 900 feet will be enforced around the fireworks barge from 10 p.m. until after the show ends at approximately 12:30 a.m. This precaution is necessary due to an incident that occurred during last year's show when a small vessel entered the fallout zone and could have been hit by burning debris if shooting had not been temporarily halted.

The Juneau Fireworks Crew, a team of licensed pyrotechnic specialists, will be responsible for operating the fireworks display. Comprised of State-certified professional operators and assistants who adhere to strict safety standards, this dedicated group spends countless hours volunteering their time to obtain all necessary permits and design and execute the show.

Mayor Beth Weldon expressed her excitement for Juneau's unique Fourth of July celebrations and praised the professionalism and dedication of the Fireworks Crew in ensuring that the show remains a beloved event for residents every summer.

The fireworks show truly is a community effort, made possible by generous donations and volunteer efforts from local businesses such as AMAK Towing, Alaska Marine Lines, DIPAC, Trucano Construction Co., Alaska Concrete Casting, AggPro, Breeze In, A-1 Hearth & Stone, Nugget Alaskan Outfitters (NAO), Dahlberg Design, Bluhm Services, and Pyramid Abatement.

Residents can expect more information from the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) and the Juneau Police Department (JPD) regarding service interruptions and street closures to support the Fourth of July events. With just ten days left until the celebrations begin, Juneau is buzzing with excitement for another unforgettable Independence Day.
