~ Juneau, Alaska - The City and Borough of Juneau has announced that they will be accepting public proposals for projects to be funded with the 2025 Marine Passenger Fee (MPF) proceeds. This annual process allows members of the community to have a say in how fees from the cruise ship industry are reinvested in local businesses and services.
Starting on December 2, 2024, and running through January 2, 2025, individuals and businesses are encouraged to submit their project proposals via a webform. This new method aims to provide more information about the restricted nature of these funds and increase the success rate of submissions.
The MPF was established in 1999 by Juneau voters as a $5 fee per cruise ship passenger. These fees are designated to fund projects that directly benefit the visitor industry and enhance the tourism experience in Juneau. They also help offset any negative impacts on the community caused by the cruise ship industry.
All members of the public, including businesses and those involved in the visitor industry, are encouraged to submit project proposals that will be funded by MPF proceeds. These projects must address an impact made on the community by the cruise ship industry or improve an aspect of the tourism experience for cruise ship passengers. For a full description of project eligibility, interested parties can refer to CBJ 69.20.120.

After all submissions have been received, the City Manager will develop a draft recommendation list of projects to be funded by MPF proceeds. This list will then be open for a 30-day public comment period before being finalized. The draft recommendation list and all project proposals will be available on the Marine Passenger Fee Program website.
Once finalized, all project proposals and comments will be forwarded to the Assembly Finance Committee for review before being presented to the Assembly during their upcoming budget cycle. All proposals must be submitted by January 2, 2025, either through the webform or to the City Manager's Office.
For more information on the Marine Passenger Fee Program and how to submit a proposal, individuals can contact CBJ Visitor Industry Director Alexandra Pierce or visit the program's webpage. This is an opportunity for the community to have a say in how these funds are used to benefit Juneau and its visitors.
