~ As the October 1, 2024 CBJ Municipal Election approaches, Juneau residents are gearing up to make their voices heard. With positions for Mayor, Assembly, and Board of Education up for grabs, as well as various ballot propositions and recall petitions to vote on, it's shaping up to be a busy election season.
According to the official press release from the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ), regular municipal elections are conducted as by-mail elections. This means that all registered voters in Juneau will automatically receive a ballot in the mail between September 12 and October 1. Voters have the option to return their ballots by postal mail or through a ballot drop box, or they can choose to vote in person at a Vote Center.
For those who will not be in Juneau during the election period, there are still options available to cast their vote. One option is to fill out a temporary address application and receive their ballot at a different mailing location. However, this must be done by Tuesday, August 27 in order for the temporary address to be included in the initial ballot mail-out. Applications received after this date will still be processed but may not arrive in time for the election. The final deadline to submit a temporary address application is September 24.

Another option is to vote by e-ballot or fax. To do so, voters must fill out an e-ballot/fax application by 5 p.m. Alaska Time on September 30. E-ballots will be sent out beginning approximately September 18. It's important to note that if voters choose this option, they must be able to print out their ballot and voter certificate as they cannot accept digitally altered ballots.
Once marked and signed, e-ballots can be returned via email (scan or photograph), fax, or postal mail. Ballots returned by email or fax must arrive by 8 p.m. Alaska Time on October 1, while those returned by postal mail must be postmarked by October 1 and received by October 14.
For more information about the upcoming election, including drop box locations and Vote Center services, voters can visit the CBJ Municipal Elections homepage at juneau.org/clerk/elections. It's important for all Juneau residents to stay informed and exercise their right to vote in the October 1, 2024 CBJ Municipal Election.
