~ Juneau, Alaska - As the city continues to recover from the recent flooding, various organizations have come together to assist in the cleanup efforts. The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ), along with the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) and the Alaska National Guard, have been working tirelessly throughout the week to collect household garbage, furniture, and debris from affected neighborhoods.

Starting tomorrow, Sunday, August 11, a new phase of debris collection will begin. Crews will now be focusing on hazardous waste materials. This includes items such as chemicals and other potentially dangerous materials that may have been damaged or displaced during the flooding.

Residents are advised to separate their hazardous waste from other debris and leave it in the designated right-of-way (ROW) for collection. For those who need assistance in moving their hazardous waste to the ROW, a volunteer support program has been set up. Residents can sign up for this service at ly/juneau-flood.

In addition to hazardous waste, crews have also begun collecting construction and demolition debris from the ROW. This includes items such as sheet rock and other building materials. Residents are reminded to only place these items in the designated area for collection.

For those with large appliances that need to be disposed of, crews have already begun picking them up since Saturday, August 10. Residents are asked to empty refrigerators and freezers of any food before setting them out in the ROW. If assistance is needed in moving an appliance across their yard, residents can simply wave down approaching crews for help.

For those who prefer not to wait for pick-up services, self-haul options are also available. The latest information on these options can be found on juneau.org/manager/flood-response.
