~ Juneau, Alaska - The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) staff are currently working to arrange a disaster debris collection following the recent floods in the area. According to CBJ officials, residents will be notified as soon as more information and dates for the cleanup become available.
In the meantime, CBJ is urging residents to follow specific guidelines for any materials that will be included in the flood debris collection. These guidelines include bagging all waste where possible, reducing the size of larger items if possible, and keeping all waste within property boundaries until instructed by CBJ to move it to the right-of-way (ROW) for collection.
Furthermore, residents are advised to separate their waste into three categories: residential waste, household hazardous waste (HHW), and construction and demolition (C&D) waste. A handout with more detailed information on these categories is available for reference.
For those who do not wish to wait for the official disaster debris collection, there are limited options currently available for disposal. The Waste Management (WM) landfill is open during regular hours with no special hours designated for disaster debris disposal. Residents can contact WM at (907) 780-7801 for more information about the landfill. Additionally, bulky items can be collected by Alaska Waste by calling (907) 780-7800.

The WM landfill has different operating hours and rates for commercial and residential customers. Commercial customers can dispose of waste from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays, while residential customers can do so from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
The rates at WM landfill vary depending on the type of waste being disposed of. Household and C&D waste will cost $215 per ton with a minimum charge of $153.32, while refrigerators and freezers will cost $115 per unit with a minimum charge of $164.
Residents are also reminded by WM that any C&D waste potentially containing asbestos must be accompanied by a Non-Asbestos Certification form. If the exemptions apply, the homeowner or contractor must sign the form and provide it at the time of disposal. However, if the exemptions do not apply, an asbestos professional must inspect the structure or debris before disposal. For more information on this matter, residents can contact WM at (907) 780-7801.
CBJ and WM are working diligently to ensure that proper and safe disposal of disaster debris is carried out in a timely manner. Residents are encouraged to stay updated on any further developments and instructions from CBJ regarding the disaster debris collection.
