~ Juneau, Alaska - The recent Mendenhall River flooding on August 6 has left a trail of destruction in its wake, with approximately 290 residences, including apartments and condos, being damaged by floodwaters. In response to this disaster, the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) and the American Red Cross of Alaska have conducted preliminary damage assessments of the affected neighborhoods over the weekend.

As residents begin to pick up the pieces and plan for long-term recovery, CBJ and Department of Transportation (DOT) crews are working tirelessly to collect flood debris from impacted areas. This includes construction and demolition waste, large appliances, and hazardous materials. The latest information on debris pick-up can be found on the CBJ website.

The community's response to this disaster has been heartwarming, with over 100 volunteers showing up at the Melvin Park volunteer center on Saturday. However, there is still a great need for more helping hands. Experienced volunteer teams and partner organizations are mobilizing to provide support, but the community is urged to continue offering their assistance.

The volunteer center will be open on Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with hours on Tuesday and Wednesday to follow. Residents are encouraged to stop by Melvin Park to find out how they can lend a hand. Hot meals will also be provided during these days from 12-2 p.m. and 5-7 p.m., including options for vegans and those with gluten-free diets.

As of Sunday, August 11, the volunteer center is in need of dehumidifiers, respirators, and elbow-length rubber gloves. Those who have these items available for loan or donation can drop them off at the center during its operating hours. It is important to label any loaned equipment with your name and phone number.

In addition to damaged homes, many residents are also facing the loss of their vehicles due to the flood. For those with comprehensive coverage, it is advised to reach out to your insurer as soon as possible. CBJ also offers a year-round junk vehicle program for free disposal, but the high number of damaged vehicles may overwhelm their processing partner. CBJ is currently working on a solution for immediate acceptance and processing of these vehicles.

However, for health and safety reasons, the top priority for debris removal is municipal solid waste, construction and demolition waste, and household hazardous waste. Once progress has been made in clearing these types of debris from affected neighborhoods, attention will be turned towards junk vehicles. Residents can expect further guidance on this matter in the near future.

As Juneau continues to recover from this devastating flood, it is heartening to see the community coming together to support one another. The city urges residents to stay tuned for updates and continue offering their assistance in any way they can.
