~ Juneau, Alaska- In the aftermath of the recent Mendenhall River flood, the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) are teaming up to provide valuable information and answer questions for homeowners on flood preparation. The two organizations will be hosting public events on November 12 and 14 at Thunder Mountain Middle School to share knowledge and address concerns.
For many homeowners in the community, this will be their first time exploring individual flood-fighting and mitigation tactics. With questions ranging from how to properly use sandbags to steps for protecting their homes, these events are designed to provide answers and guidance.
The first event, a public meeting hosted by USACE, will take place on Tuesday, November 12 from 6-8 p.m. Attendees can expect a presentation followed by a question and answer session. On Thursday, November 14 from 4-7 p.m., USACE will hold an open house where individuals can drop in at any time to ask questions or speak one-on-one with experts.

Both events will be held at the Thunder Mountain Middle School auditorium located at 3101 Dimond Park Loop. While there will not be a live stream available, a recording of the public meeting will be made available online afterwards. The open house will not be recorded.
These events are specifically geared towards addressing concerns that individual homeowners may have about protecting their homes and property during floods. Additionally, CBJ is currently exploring various long-term mitigation options such as HESCO barriers. For more information on past and upcoming public meetings regarding these options, individuals can sign up for CBJ alerts at bit.ly/CBJAlerts, follow CBJ on Facebook, or check the Public Meetings tab on CBJ's Flood Response webpage.
This is an important opportunity for homeowners to gain valuable knowledge and resources in order to better prepare for potential future floods. The CBJ and USACE are committed to providing support and information to the community in order to ensure the safety and protection of homes and property.
