Juneau: JSD students name CBJ Streets winter maintenance vehicles
AkGlobe News/10272249

~ Juneau, Alaska - Students at Montessori Borealis Public School and Juneau Community Charter School were recently given a unique opportunity to interact with one of CBJ Streets & Fleet Maintenance's graders, affectionately known as Sir Plowsalot. This was made possible through a partnership between CBJ and the two schools in May 2023, where students were tasked with naming seven winter maintenance vehicles.

The students, ranging from kindergarten to middle school, held class contests to come up with the final names for the vehicles. Streets operators also visited classrooms to educate the students on how the equipment works and the important role it plays in keeping Juneau's streets clear.

According to Scott Gray, Superintendent of Streets & Fleet Maintenance, the community has responded positively to the new names on the equipment. He also expressed his enjoyment in working with the students and helping them understand the behind-the-scenes work that goes into maintaining their city's streets.

The winning names for the graders were Sir Plowsalot (chosen by grades K-1 at Montessori Borealis), Golden Goat (chosen by grades 2-3 at Montessori Borealis), and Plowy McPlowplow (chosen by middle school students at JCCS). The plow trucks were named Thunder (grades K-1 at JCCS), Sam (grades 4-5 at JCCS), and Big Bob (grades 4-5 at Montessori Borealis). The brine truck was named Ice Bite (grades 2-3 at JCCS).

These newly christened vehicles have been put to good use this winter, as January alone saw a record-breaking 76.8 inches of snowfall in Juneau. This kept crews busy around the clock, ensuring that roads remained safe for residents.

Streets & Fleet Maintenance plans to continue their partnership with students by naming two more graders later this year. For more information on winter street maintenance in Juneau, visit CBJ's Winter Maintenance Information webpage.
