~ Juneau, Alaska- The City and Borough of Juneau, in partnership with Tlingit & Haida, will be hosting three community events in Dimond Park to distribute free sandbags and provide flood preparedness information. The events will take place on May 31, June 7, and June 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Thunder Mountain Middle School parking lot.
Residents are encouraged to drop by and pick up sandbags while also having the opportunity to ask experts questions about flood insurance and how to protect their property. The sandbags will be provided by CBJ and T&H along with shovels for filling them. Some pre-filled sandbags will also be available, as well as volunteers to assist with filling bags.
According to officials, each household at risk of glacial lake outburst flooding (GLOF) is eligible for up to 50 sandbags. However, more may become available depending on demand. Residents are advised to visit juneau.org/newsroom or follow CBJ on Facebook for the latest updates.

In addition to providing sandbags, CBJ and T&H are working together to help the community prepare for GLOFs along the Mendenhall River. New and updated maps showing predicted inundation at different flood levels are now available at bit.ly/MendenhallFloodMaps. These maps can help residents understand how a GLOF may affect their neighborhood.
To further assist residents in preparing for potential floods, CBJ and T&H have launched a new flood preparedness website at bit.ly/JuneauFloodReady. This website provides information on current conditions and individual steps that can be taken to prepare for a flood event.
Residents are also encouraged to sign up for CBJ emergency text and email alerts at bit.ly/CBJAlerts.
For any questions or concerns regarding the upcoming community events or flood preparedness, residents can contact Ryan O'Shaughnessy, CBJ Emergency Programs Manager, at (907) 586-0419 or Sabrina Grubitz, Tlingit & Haida Public Safety Manager, at (907) 463-7730.
