~ During a special meeting of the Assembly Committee of the Whole, the CBJ Assembly approved a proposal to extend the installation of HESCO flood barriers in order to further protect property and infrastructure. This decision, known as Phase 1A of the HESCO barrier project, was made after careful consideration and guidance from the recently released Mendenhall Valley Flood Fighting Inundation Maps.

Thanks to efficient planning and budgeting, Phase 1 of the HESCO barrier installation was completed on May 10. Now, the CBJ will move forward with Phase 1A, which is set to begin on Tuesday, May 13. The installation will take place along the river adjacent to Dimond Park, from Rivercourt Way to the CBJ property behind Kax̲dig̲oowu Héen Elementary School.

Contractors will be working simultaneously on both sides of Dimond Park, installing barriers along the social trail next to the riverside edge. This may cause some inconvenience for those using the trails near Dimond Park Fieldhouse and Thunder Mountain Middle School. The work is expected to continue through late May or early June.

To ensure safety during this time, it is advised that people avoid this area as trails will be closed. However, both sides of the Mendenhall Pedestrian Bridge will remain open for public use. There may also be minimal impacts on vehicular traffic flow, but it is important for drivers to follow posted signage and be aware of heavy equipment operating in the area.

The CBJ would like to express their appreciation for patience and understanding as they continue their efforts to protect the community and infrastructure from potential glacial lake outburst floods. By extending the installation of HESCO barriers and following through with Phase 1A, they are taking proactive measures to ensure safety for all.
