Juneau: Gastineau Avenue Landslide Update (9 PM 9/27)

As of 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 27, CBJ Public Works crews have completed their initial site preparations to begin debris clearance in the area around the Gastineau Avenue landslide. Clearance work is anticipated to begin at approximately 8 a.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, September 28.

Preliminary assessments have determined that under the current favorable weather conditions hazard risk has returned to has returned to typical levels for the area. The public is asked to avoid the area while clearance crews are at work to ensure general safety and allow for work to proceed as swiftly and smoothly as possible.

Gastineau Avenue remains closed to all but local and emergency traffic from the Gold Street and First Street intersection onwards. The staircases at Decker Way and Rawn Way will also be closed to all but local and emergency foot traffic beginning with the onset of debris removal tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.

Vehicles parked within one block of the debris area on the Mount Juneau side (167 Gastineau Avenue northward) should be removed from the street by 6 a.m. tomorrow morning in order to allow access for crew vehicles and operations. Vehicles that have not been moved by this time will be towed to Zach Gordon Youth Center at 396 Whittier Street. Vehicle owners will not be charged any fees and may pick up their vehicles at their convenience.

Power has been restored to the majority of homes in the area and it is anticipated that full restoration will be complete by the end of the day tomorrow.
