~ On the morning of May 17, 2025, a sudden gasoline spill at the CBJ Mendenhall Treatment Plant caused a disruption in wastewater treatment operations. The incident occurred at 6:15 a.m. and prompted the temporary evacuation of a portion of the facility.

According to utility treatment operators, the severity of the spill required immediate action to isolate and contain the damage. As a result, an investigation was launched in collaboration with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC), Spill Prevention and Response.

The presence of gasoline in the CBJ sewer system poses significant risks to human health, infrastructure, and the environment. It also interferes with the waste treatment process and puts fisheries at risk.

In light of this incident, both CBJ Utility and ADEC are urging members of the community to come forward with any information regarding gasoline spills or discharges in the Mendenhall Valley, Lemon Creek, and Salmon Creek areas. This includes any sightings or knowledge of fuel spills, leaking tanks or pipes, or other potential sources that may be releasing fuels into drainage and sewer systems.

The joint investigation team is being led by ADEC's office of Spill Prevention and Recovery (SPAR), which has set up a hazardous substance hotline for reporting purposes. Those who wish to report any relevant information can do so by calling 1-800-478-9300 toll-free or 1-907-269-0667 internationally. Reports can also be made online at reportspills.alaska.gov.

The CBJ Utility and ADEC express their gratitude for any assistance provided by members of the community in this matter. The safety and protection of human health and the environment are top priorities for both organizations.
