~ In the late hours of December 20th, the U.S. Senate passed House Resolution 10545, also known as the American Relief Act of 2025. This legislation includes disaster relief funding and a specific provision to support Juneau's flood mitigation efforts, thanks to the advocacy of Alaska's federal delegation.

The provision in H.R. 10545 directs the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to initiate a General Investigation for high-priority studies of projects, specifically including glacial lake outburst flooding. This addition was championed by Senator Lisa Murkowski and Senator Dan Sullivan, who have been tirelessly advocating for recovery and mitigation efforts following the catastrophic glacial lake outburst flood that devastated the Mendenhall Valley in August of 2024.

Through their leadership and advocacy, Senators Murkowski and Sullivan were able to draw national attention and resources to the community. This legislation marks a crucial step for the City and Borough of Juneau, Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, and their federal partners to continue moving forward on a long-term mitigation solution in 2025.

Tlingit & Haida President Chalyee Éesh Richard Peterson also commended Senators Murkowski and Sullivan for their tireless advocacy in securing critical funding for Mendenhall Glacial Lake Outburst Flood mitigation efforts. He emphasized that this partnership with their federal delegation is essential as they work together towards developing a long-term solution that protects their people, lands, and way of life.

While this investigation study is an important next step, it is acknowledged that there is still much work to be done in order to fully protect the community. The partnership with the federal delegation will continue to be crucial in navigating the federal landscape and securing necessary resources for Juneau's long-term flood mitigation efforts.
