~ Juneau, Alaska - The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Mendenhall Lake and River after a glacier-dammed lake outburst. According to the NWS, the river is currently rising as expected and there have been no changes to the forecast as of 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 20.
Based on the current forecast, the Mendenhall River is expected to reach a crest between 11 and 11.5 feet on Monday, October 21, between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. This could result in flooding on View Drive, making it impassable and potentially affecting homes in the area. Additionally, homes along Meander Way may also experience flooding in their backyards.
The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) is closely monitoring the situation and urges all members of the public to avoid the Mendenhall River until further notice for their own safety as well as others'. The banks are unstable and slippery due to recent snowfall.

In case of emergency, individuals are advised to call 911 immediately to contact Capital City Fire/Rescue for assistance. It is important not to delay in seeking help.
As of this afternoon, several roads and trails have been closed to traffic including View Drive, Skater's Cabin Road, Kaxdigoowu Héen Dei (Brotherhood Bridge Trail), and Dimond Park pedestrian bridge.
