~ Residents of Juneau are facing the aftermath of a devastating flood that has left many with damaged or totaled vehicles. As they try to figure out their next steps, there are a few options available to them, depending on whether they plan on filing an insurance claim or not.

For those who have comprehensive coverage, it is advised to reach out to their insurer as soon as possible. Insurance companies have their own process for disposing of vehicles that are considered a "total loss" or "totaled." It is important for those filing an insurance claim to not have the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) remove their vehicle, as this could negatively impact their claim.

On the other hand, for those who are not filing an insurance claim, CBJ will soon begin removing flood-damaged vehicles from affected owners. To have your vehicle collected by CBJ, please email [insert email address] to be added to the list. The email should include contact information such as name, address, and phone number, as well as vehicle information including make and model, color, and year. A CBJ staff member will follow up in the near future to arrange collection.

However, if waiting for CBJ's removal service is not an option, residents can take advantage of the year-round junk vehicle program offered by CBJ. This program allows residents to dispose of junk vehicles for free. Step-by-step instructions can be found on juneau.org/engineering-public-works/recycleworks/junk-cars.

It is important to note that before any vehicle can be taken away by CBJ or accepted by the junk vehicle processor, all personal items and garbage must be removed from the vehicle. These materials can be bagged and placed in the right-of-way for collection.

The City and Borough of Juneau understands the challenges faced by residents in dealing with damaged vehicles after a natural disaster like this flood. They are committed to providing support and resources to help residents navigate this difficult situation.
