AkGlobe News/10272410

~ The Juneau School District has taken a proactive step in keeping the community informed about their efforts to address the budget shortfall for the current fiscal year and develop a new budget for the following year. In order to provide timely updates, the district has launched a special newsletter that can be accessed through various platforms.

To receive these updates as soon as they are available, community members can download the free Juneau Borough Schools App from the App Store or Google Play and follow "District". They can also visit the Juneau School District website and click on the 2024 Budget Information tile to read the newsletter in PDF format.

The latest update, released on February 27, focuses on the school reconfiguration plan that was adopted at a special meeting of the Board of Education on February 22. This plan will play a crucial role in completing the budget process for FY25.

In order to continue this budget work, there will be a special meeting on Tuesday where topics such as enrollment projections and school staffing will be discussed. However, there are no action items on the agenda for this meeting and therefore no votes will be taken. Additionally, as it is a special meeting, there will be no opportunity for public testimony on non-action items.

The meeting will be held at Juneau-Douglas High School Library and is also available on Zoom for up to 500 participants. The link to join can be found on the district's website.

Moving forward, one of the next steps is to present a winter budget revision for FY24. This revision must be approved by the Board of Education and must balance with help from three ordinances that are currently being considered by CBJ Assembly. These ordinances are expected to be discussed at their Regular Assembly Meeting on Monday, March 4 at 7 p.m.

Furthermore, in order to meet their budget deadline for FY25, a balanced budget must be submitted to CBJ Assembly by April 4, 2024. The district is working diligently to ensure that this deadline is met and that the budget for the following year is balanced.

The Juneau School District remains committed to keeping the community informed and involved in the budget process. With the launch of their special newsletter and upcoming meetings, they hope to continue working towards a solution for the current and future budgets.
