At the February 22 meeting, the Board of Education voted to adopt a plan for school reconfiguration for the upcoming school year. The plan includes having K-6 grades at neighborhood schools, 7-8 grades at Thunder Mountain Middle School, and 9-12 grades at Juneau Douglas High School. Alternative and optional programs such as Montessori Borealis, Juneau Community Charter School, Yaaḵoosgé Daakahídi at Dzantik'i Heeni, Tlingit Culture, Language and Literacy at Harborview, HomeBRIDGE at Thunder Mountain, and District Office at Thunder Mountain, Harborview or Dzantik'i Heeni will also be available.
In addition to this reconfiguration plan, three facilities will be closed in an effort to balance the budget. These include Marie Drake and FDMS which will be released back to CBJ (City and Borough of Juneau) and district office which will also be released back to CBJ.

The decision for reconfiguration was made due to declining enrollment, rising costs, and relatively flat state funding. The school district has been facing budget constraints for years and this reorganization is necessary even without the current budget crisis.
Moving forward, the Board of Education will present a winter budget revision for the current fiscal year. This revision must be balanced and approved by the board. The board will also work on developing a balanced budget for the following fiscal year which must be submitted to the CBJ Assembly by April 4, 2024.
Community members are encouraged to attend the upcoming Board of Education Special Meeting on February 27 from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm at Juneau-Douglas High School's Yadaa.at Kale Library. The meeting can also be accessed via Zoom using the link provided on the Juneau School District website.
The Juneau School District is committed to keeping the community informed and involved in their efforts to address budget challenges and provide quality education for students. With these updates and opportunities for community input, they hope to find solutions that will benefit all stakeholders involved.
