~ A recent Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) event has been reported by the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ). According to the CBJ, the incident occurred at the Outer Drive Pump Station in Downtown Juneau along Egan Drive, resulting in a brief discharge of combined wastewater and storm water into the Gastineau Channel. The event took place on September 10, 2025 at approximately 5:00 p.m. and lasted for about thirty minutes.

The cause of the discharge was attributed to a combination of heavy precipitation and a high tide (+18.9'), which overwhelmed the outdated Outer Drive (OD) wastewater pump station. Currently, the OD station is undergoing a major reconstruction and upgrade as part of CBJ's efforts to improve aging infrastructure. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

Fortunately, environmental impacts are expected to be minimal due to the short duration of the event and the diluted nature of the discharge. Once the upgrades to the OD station are completed, similar incidents are not expected to occur in the future. CBJ has already notified the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation about this event.

For further information, interested parties can contact CBJ Utility at 907-586-0393. This incident serves as a reminder for communities to regularly maintain and upgrade their infrastructure to prevent such events from happening in the future.
