~ At the recent CBJ Special Assembly Committee of the Whole Meeting, the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) signed an amended cooperative agreement. This agreement was in response to CBJ's request for USACE Public Law 84-99 Advance Measures Assistance to address the increasing threat of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

Under this agreement, USACE will provide technical assistance and temporary flood protection measures to combat the potential damage caused by future GLOFs. This includes installing riverbank armoring and temporary flood barriers along the Phase 2 alignment of the Mendenhall River, as well as providing repairs and fortification for the Phase 1 temporary flood barrier.

The scope of this assistance will be fully funded by USACE at no cost to CBJ. The work is expected to be completed by July 15, 2026.

Materials from the October 30 meeting, where this agreement was signed, are available for review on CBJ's website. Any further inquiries can be directed to USACE or CBJ. With this partnership in place, both parties are confident in their ability to effectively protect against future GLOF events and ensure the safety of their community.
