~ Juneau, Alaska - The city of Juneau remains on high alert as the threat of avalanches continues to increase. According to the latest update from the CBJ Avalanche Advisory, issued at 6:40 p.m. on January 9, the evacuation advisory is still in effect and residents are urged to limit travel in avalanche-exposed areas.
Emergency shelter is available at Centennial Hall, located at 101 Egan Drive. The American Red Cross of Alaska has opened a shelter in the meeting room section of the building, providing mass care support and feeding services for those affected by the evacuation advisory.
The potential for more avalanches is heightened due to warmer temperatures, strong winds, and several inches of rain. Slides have already occurred in most known paths and emergency response crews are staged and ready to respond if necessary.

In addition, Thane Road has been closed by Alaska DOT&PF at the avalanche gates since noon today due to high avalanche hazard. This closure will be re-evaluated tomorrow morning at 8 a.m., but residents should be prepared for extended road closures.
To stay informed about current hazard levels, residents can visit bit.ly/CBJavalanche. More information about the current avalanche hazard and snowpack conditions can also be found on CBJ's Avalanche Advisor website at juneau.org/emergency/avalanche-information.
