~ Juneau, Alaska - The potential for avalanches in all known slide paths remains high and very likely to increase in the next 24 hours, according to the latest update from the CBJ Avalanche Advisory. This update, released at 5:37 p.m. on January 8, warns of increased snowfall, warmer temperatures, and the potential for several inches of rain at high elevations.
The CBJ Avalanche Advisor has urged residents to stay informed about current avalanche hazards and snowpack conditions by visiting juneau.org/emergency/avalanche-information. To prepare for potential emergencies, CBJ has prepositioned resources including sheltering at Centennial Hall and additional response resources if needed. As a precautionary measure, Alaska DOT&PF will close Thane Road at the avalanche gates on Friday, January 9 at 12 p.m. due to high avalanche hazard to the roadway. This closure will be re-evaluated on Saturday morning at 8 a.m., but residents should be prepared for extended road closures.
CBJ will issue an alert if there are any major changes observed and an evacuation advisory is issued. Current hazard levels can be found at bit.ly/CBJavalanche. Residents are advised to know their risk level, remain vigilant, have a go-bag ready, create household evacuation plans, and stay signed up for emergency alerts.
