~ Juneau, Alaska - The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) has announced the appointment of Thomas Hatley as the new Fire Chief for Capital City Fire Rescue (CCFR). Chief Hatley will officially begin his role on February 9, bringing with him over 30 years of progressive fire service leadership experience.
CBJ Deputy City Manager, Robert Barr, expressed excitement for Chief Hatley's arrival, stating that they are looking forward to having his extensive and relevant experience available to their dedicated first responders and support staff.
Chief Hatley's career in the fire service spans across multiple agencies in the Northwest, including Idaho and Washington. He has held various positions such as Deputy Fire Chief, Fire Chief, Assistant Chief/Fire Marshal, Division Chief, and Captain. Most recently, he served as Deputy Fire Chief for the Spokane Valley Fire Department where he oversaw major operational divisions and led interagency coordination initiatives.
In a statement, Chief Hatley shared his honor in joining CBJ and CCFR and his eagerness to work alongside the dedicated professionals of Capital City Fire Rescue. He also expressed gratitude for the leadership of retiring Fire Chief Rich Etheridge and looks forward to getting to know the Juneau community and being present where the fire department can make a difference.

As fire chief, Hatley will serve as the administrative leader of CCFR. His responsibilities include providing departmental leadership and guidance on emergency response and preparedness, fire prevention and community risk reduction, strategic planning, workforce development, interagency relations, and community engagement.
Chief Hatley succeeds Fire Chief Rich Etheridge who retired on December 31st after over 27 years of exemplary public safety service with CBJ and CCFR. In the interim period between Chief Etheridge's retirement and Chief Hatley's arrival on February 9th, Cindy Carte has stepped in as Acting Fire Chief. As CBJ HR Manager, Carte will provide steady leadership and continuity for the fire department.
The City and Borough of Juneau is excited to welcome Chief Hatley to their community and looks forward to the positive impact he will bring to the fire department and the city as a whole.
