~ Juneau's public transit system, Capital Transit, has launched a new way for riders to purchase bus fares - the Token Transit app. This convenient and cost-saving option allows users to pay for public transit using their smartphone. To celebrate the launch, the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) and Capital Transit are offering a 50% discount on fares purchased through the app from April 14-20.

According to Capital Transit Superintendent Rich Ross, this new payment option provides a modernized and convenient experience for all riders. He encourages both new and long-time transit users to take advantage of the app and the promotional discount.

But the benefits don't end there. Beyond the promotional period, Token Transit users can also take advantage of fare capping. This feature ensures that riders never pay more than the cost of a monthly pass by automatically upgrading single ride passes to a monthly pass when their spending reaches that amount. However, fare capping is only available when purchasing single-ride passes through the app. Cash fares, gifts, and other discounted fare types do not apply.

While cash payment on buses and paper monthly passes will still be accepted at existing locations such as the Municipal Building Cash Office, Mendenhall Valley Public Library, Fred Meyer, Foodland IGA, and University of Alaska Southeast, physical bus tokens will no longer be sold at these locations. However, they will still be honored by Capital Transit. The remaining token inventory has been repurposed to support CBJ social service partners.

Social service agencies interested in purchasing physical tokens or setting up a customized digital fare platform can email [email address].

To access the Token Transit app and learn more about Capital Transit fares and services, riders can visit juneaucapitaltransit.org/fares. A short instructional video is also available on the website.

For any questions or concerns, riders can contact Capital Transit at (907) 789-6901. With this new app and promotional discount, public transit in Juneau has become more convenient and affordable for all riders.
