~ Juneau, Alaska - The Canvass Review Board has completed its review of the October 7, 2025 CBJ Regular Municipal Election and the final results have been certified by the Election Official. The board began their work on Monday, October 20 and concluded on Tuesday, October 21. The official results can now be found on the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) Elections webpage at https://juneau.org/clerk/elections.
After a closely contested race, Ella Adkison has been elected to her first full three-year term as Areawide Assemblymember. In District 1, Greg Smith has been elected to his final three-year term as an Assemblymember. Nathaniel "Nano" Brooks will also be joining the Assembly for his first three-year term in District 2. On the School Board side, Steve Whitney and Melissa Cullum have been elected to three-year terms while Jenny Thomas will fill an unexpired seat for a two-year term.

The ballot propositions also saw significant attention from voters. Proposition 1, a citizen's initiative petition to amend Section 9.7 of the CBJ Charter, proposed capping the property tax rate at 9 mills with any additional millage requiring voter approval in future elections. This proposition passed with 5,163 YES votes and 5,006 NO votes.
The new rate cap is set to take effect on November 20, 2025 but will not impact municipal budgets until Fiscal Year 2027.
Another citizen's initiative petition was successful with Proposition 2 passing by a wide margin of 7,099 YES votes to only 3,100 NO votes. This proposition creates new sales tax exemptions for essential food and non-commercial essential utilities based on federal guidelines.
Propositions are scheduled to take effect on November 20, but implementation may take some time as it requires coordination between the city government, merchants, and service providers. The CBJ Finance Department will be assisting with this process and more information will be provided in the coming days.

However, not all propositions were successful. Proposition 3, which proposed a new permanent seasonal sales tax structure, failed to pass with 4,365 YES votes and 5,853 NO votes. This measure would have introduced a 2% sales tax from October 1 through March 31 and a 6.5% sales tax from April 1 through September 30 of each year while repealing the current permanent and temporary sales taxes.
A more detailed report on election statistics will be presented at the October 27 Assembly Reorganizational Meeting at Centennial Hall Ballroom #3 at 6 p.m. The meeting will also be available remotely via Zoom webinar.
The CBJ would like to extend their gratitude to the over 10,000 people who voted in this election as well as the candidates who ran for office. Special thanks were given to the dedicated CBJ Election Workers and support staff who worked tirelessly to ensure the safety and integrity of the municipal election.
