JUNEAU, Alaska ~ Juneau, Alaska - After more than 34 years of dedicated service, Michael Garrett, President and CEO of Alaska Power & Telephone (AP&T), has announced his planned retirement. The company's Board of Directors has announced that William D. Marks will take over as the new President and CEO effective February 1, following the successful completion of their succession plan.
Garrett expressed his gratitude to the employee-owners of AP&T for the opportunity to work with them for so many years. He also acknowledged their collective efforts in building a foundation of trust and openness within the company. "We have also proven to be a proud investor in the communities we serve," he added.
In a joint statement, the AP&T Board of Directors thanked Garrett for his leadership and extensive contributions to the company, its employee-owners, customers, and communities. They praised his dedicated care and concern for all stakeholders as a hallmark of his tenure as CEO.
To ensure a smooth transition, Garrett will serve as senior advisor to Marks until March 31, 2024. The Board wished him and his wife Laurie all the best in their well-deserved retirement.
Marks brings with him over thirty years of experience as a successful executive, thought leader, and visionary in the cable TV and satellite industries. He was a founder and President of DBS Direct/DIRECTV - the first direct-to-home satellite television network - and CEO of Seamobile, which provided satellite broadband connectivity to cruise ships including those that frequent Southeast Alaska.

The AP&T Board stated that Marks stood out from a large pool of internal and external candidates due to his impressive track record. "We were delighted with the strong interest and high quality of candidates," they said. "After careful consideration of AP&T's needs at this time, we are confident that Bill Marks is the right choice to lead our company."
Garrett also expressed confidence in Marks' abilities to build upon AP&T's foundation and bring value to the services that the company provides to its communities. "I have no doubt Bill will build a lasting relationship with all of AP&T's stakeholders," he said, "allowing the company to continue being a strong, growing, and innovative leader in the energy and communications industries."
In 2007, Marks was recognized for his leadership as CEO and Chairman of Seamobile when he won the prestigious Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. At that time, Seamobile was the largest managed service satellite provider in the world.
