Alaska DHS&EM: Disaster Assistance Center to open for 2024 August Juneau basin flood survivors

~ Juneau, Alaska - The Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management has announced the opening of a Disaster Assistance Center for survivors of the 2024 August Juneau Basin Flood. The center will be available from August 14-16, 2024, to provide in-person assistance for residents affected by the recent glacial outburst flood in Suicide Basin.

The flooding, which occurred on August 6, caused major damage in the Mendenhall Valley area. In response, the State of Alaska is offering Individual Assistance to homeowners and renters who have experienced damage to their primary residence or primary means of transportation.

Residents who are unable to return to their homes are encouraged to visit the Disaster Assistance Center at either the Mendenhall Valley Library or Generations Southeast Community Learning. The center will be open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and afterhours appointments can be made by calling 907-632-2165.

Those who prefer online or telephone registration can visit Ready.Alaska.Gov/IA or call 844-445-7131. When visiting the DAC, survivors are asked to bring documentation such as a description of damages and/or losses, home ownership documents, insurance information, personal identification, and proof of occupancy.

Representatives from various organizations including the City and Borough of Juneau, Tlingit & Haida Tribe, American Red Cross of Alaska, and other agencies will be present at the DAC to provide assistance.

The deadline to apply for State Individual Assistance is October 9, 2024. For more information about the program, residents can visit https://ready.alaska.gov/Recovery/IA. The State's Individual Assistance program aims to help those affected by natural disasters get back on their feet.
